Troegs Mad Elf Coming 10/15! / Scratch Updates (Rye IPA, Fresh Hop & Pumpkin)

imageI’m excited to report that Troegs Mad Elf bottles will hit the shelves on Oct 15th, with draft following in Mid-Nov.  From Troegs:

You can always tell that the holidays are right around the corner when Christmas displays begin popping up in department stores all across the country. Here at Tröegs, it isn’t officially Christmas until Mad Elf is released. Well folks, Christmas is upon us! The bottled version of Mad Elf is slated to hit the streets on October 15, with a draft release to follow in mid-to-late November. Festive and exuberant, Mad Elf is our nod to the hectic holiday season. Revered by beer geeks far and wide, The Mad Elf Ale weighs in at 11% ABV and features the lavish combination of chocolate malt, spicy Belgian yeast, sweet and sour cherries, and Pennsylvania honey. Get yours right away, because when the Elf goes into hiding, he won’t appear again until next year!

Scratch Beer Updates:

Rye IPA – Brewed in celebration of a Tröegs employee’s upcoming wedding, Scratch #77 is an IPA at heart with a spicy rye malt base. Brewed exclusively with Galaxy hops, it embodies the essence of passionfruit. We’re sure you’ll love this beer and will answer “I do” when someone asks if you’d like another. Available on draft only.

Fresh Hop Ale – On Tuesday, September 18, we received two palettes – that’s 400 pounds – of freshly picked Citra hops from B.T. Loftus Ranches in Yakima, WA. So, what do you do with a truckload of these glorious green cones? Get brewing right away, of course! Our brewers are hoping to rekindle the magic of past Fresh Hop Scratch beers with this latest Scratch creation. Expect an early October release. Available in bottles and on draft.

Pumpkin Beer – In an effort to brew outside of our comfort zone, we are pleased to announce the first-ever Tröegs Pumpkin beer. John Trogner hopes to push the boundaries of our Scratch beer system with this particular one-off release. To start, we’re using in-house roasted longneck pumpkins from Strite’s Orchard and traditional autumn spices such as cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. We also chose to ferment the beer with Saison yeast, which will complement the spicy harvest flavors. We’re hoping this inaugural pumpkin beer will give you something to look forward to this fall! Available on draft only
.

Dead Reckoning

To celebrate the harvest season, we recently released our fall seasonal, Dead Reckoning Porter. Dead Reckoning will be available throughout our distribution area during the month of October, so be sure stock up on this robust beer as the cooler weather approaches. You can also stop by our Tasting Room to get your Dead Reckoning fix.

Troegs Scratch #76 “Special HOPS” Coming Today

image
Some great info on Troegs Scratch #76 “Special HOPS” coming today from Troegs:

We’re excited to announce the release Scratch #76 – Special HOPS today! Special HOPS is an Imperial Red Ale brewed especially for the HydroWorx Underwater Marathon event to be held on Sunday, September 9 to benefit The Eagle Fund. Just like the highly-trained military units used for unconventional, often high-risk missions, Special HOPS is bold, aggressive and sure to sabotage your senses and bombard your palate with hop bitterness. Special HOPS is currently available on draft in our Tasting Room via pints and growler fills, as well as in single bottles, six-packs and cases in our General Store.

Other Scratch beers in the works include a pumpkin beer brewed with pumpkins roasted in-house, and a wet hop ale featuring hops delivered straight to the brewery and used immediately in order to retain the fresh hop oils that give the beer its olfactory sensory overload!

Three New Troegs Scratch Beers Pouring Today-66,67 & 68

imageNow that the scratch beer showdown is history and Philly Beer Week is in high gear, Troegs is releasing the three related Scratch beers at the brewery.  Details from Troegs:

SCRATCH #68-2012 – Zwickel Licker
RELEASE DATE: 6/4/12
A collaboration between beer writer Lew Bryson and brewer Jeff Musselman, Scratch
#68-2012 has been brewed specifically for Philly Beer Week. Lew chose to brew a Dortmunder Lager as he loves to drink session beers as much as he loves to write about them. Staying true to style, Zwickel Licker delivers a delicate barley field aroma with an earthy bitterness. At 5.4% ABV and 23 IBUs this beer deserves to be consumed outdoors while wearing lederhosen.

SCRATCH
#67-2012 – Brotherly Suds Vol. 3
RELEASE DATE: 6/4/12
This year’s Philly Beer Week Beer, Brotherly Suds Volume 3, was created collectively by brewers from Iron Hill Brewing, Sly Fox Brewing, Stoudt’s Brewing, Tröegs Brewing, Victory Brewing and Yards Brewing, and brewed at Tröegs Brewery in Hershey.
Via a flurry of emails, this collective cobbled together a Vienna Red Lager recipe that incorporates rye, American hops, and Kolsch yeast. By combining the spicy rye along with Centennial hops and subtle fruity flavors of the Kolsch yeast, hints of cream sickle shine through as this pungent American hop intertwines with a rich mix of barley.  At 5.2% ABV and 40 IBU, Scratch #67 is a testament to team work and impeccable taste! Enjoy!

SCRATCH
#66-2012 – Biere de Grouch
RELEASE DATE: 6/4/12
A collaboration between beer writer Jack Curtin and brewer Tim Mayhew, Scratch
#66-2012 has been brewed specifically for Philly Beer Week. Like his snark-filled rants, Jack’s beer tastes veer toward the peppery, yeasty flavor that dominates this French-style lager. The high-temperature fermentation and the addition of Tellicherry Black Pepper combine to create a deceptively, crisp, clean flavor for a 6.8% ABV beer.

Troegs Scratch Beer Showdown - Cousin Lew vs Uncle Jack (Video)

We brought you the news here…and now this from Troegs:

We invited two beer writers to each come and brew a beer of their choice on our scratch system here at Tröegs. Lew Bryson and Jack Curtin go head to head in this Scratch Beer Showdown.

Lew worked hand in hand with Jeff Musselman to come up with the recipe for his Zwickel Licker an unfiltered Dortmunder Export Lager. Jack snuck in the brewery in the cover of darkness and blindfolded Tim Mayhew while he brewed his Biere de Grouch with a secret ingredient.

Sunday, June 3rd 2012 from 5-9pm at Standard Tap in Philly we will be celebrating Philly Beer Week and sampling these labors of love.

Featuring the voice of Scott Palmer.

Troegs Scratch # 63 Coming 4/27 –Danny’s IPA -A Tribute To Danny Glover

Troegs13Oct 2011 014

Troegs will be releasing Scratch # 63 on Friday (4/27) – Danny’s IPA…a tribute to the late Danny Glover.  Scratch # 63 is a Black IPA modeled after Danny’s Favorite beer, Nugget Nectar; and Troegs will donate $10 from every case to the Gift of Life Organ Donation program.  Details from Troegs:

SCRATCH #63 – DANNY’S IPA

Join us on Friday, April 27 for the release of Scratch #63 – Danny’s IPA.

This Black IPA was brewed as a tribute to Danny Glover, a Troegs Brewery family member who passed away in late January.

Cases, drafts and growler fills available starting at 11 a.m.

Firkin tapping at 3 p.m.

$10 from every case of Scratch #63 sold will go directly to the Gift of Life Donor Program in Danny’s name.

For more information on becoming an organ donor, click here: http://www.donors1.org/

REMEMBERING DANNY

On January 31, 2012 Tröegs Brewery lost a family member.

Danny Glover didn’t work for Tröegs very long, but his death nine days after a car accident on an icy stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike shook the brewery to the core. Our brewery family is relatively young and to think that a 24 year-old guy who leaves in a car one morning (ironically to attend a funeral) could be gone a week later is unbelievable.

Troegs Nugget Nectar 2012 Update–SEPA-Yes, eBay-Yes, PA-Yes, NEPA-NO

image
I get so many questions this time of year regarding the whereabouts of Troegs Nugget Nectar, I thought I’d provide an update.  Before anyone thinks differently, I DO want to thank John, Chris, Ed & everyone @ Troegs for how they handled the Nugget Nectar 2012 release.  I was really pleased to see all of the information they put out on Facebook and their website and I think that was very helpful this year.

Unfortunately, after Nugget Nectar left the brewery it’s become somewhat of a game of Where’s Waldo.  Let me preface this by saying that it’s a rapidly changing situation.  By the time you read this, things probably have change already…but what I can tell you:

Nugget Nectar was officially released at the brewery on Tuesday 2/21, and while it somehow found it’s way into Southeastern PA on Friday 2/17, most official releases occurred on 2/21.  I can confirm that Nugget Nectar bottles & kegs are available to the public in most of Southeastern PA, in all of the Westy’s accounts out toward State College, as far north as Massachusetts & NY.  I’m frustrated to also confirm it is not only being sold on eBay but someone is actually selling an entire case!

I’m equally frustrated to report that Northeastern PA has yet to see a drop.  While I expect this will change, I will be very curious to hear the explanation for how an account just over 1-hour away from Troegs is behind Philly, NY and Massachusetts to have Nugget Nectar actually hit the shelves.

I know Nugget Nectar for PA left the brewery days ago…so OK NEPA….Where’s Waldo?

Troegs Scratch # 58 Triple Mango IPA Homebrew Contest Winners is Out

imageScratch # 58 Triple Mango IPA was just put on tap at Troegs.  This is a tap-only small batch release so get it while you can.  Details here form Troegs:

Just tapped! Scratch #58 is collaboration between Tröegs brewers along with Troy Gadbury and Brad Moyer, winners of a homebrew contest sponsored by Al’s of Hampden. This Triple Mango IPA is bold, brazen and over-the-top. Unfiltered and highly-carbonated (for killer hop burps), Scratch 58 measures in at 125 IBU’s and 10.8% ABV. With a spicy mango nose and an intense overripe grapefruit flavor, we recommend this beer as the grand finale to your day as it overwhelms even the most-hoppy beers.

Maris Otter provides an earthy flavor with strong hints of biscuit and is the predominant barley taste in this beer.

Columbus dry-hopping creates a strong herbaceous flavor, while the entire hop blend screams grapefruit with pine and floral accents.

Wildflower Honey, Cane Sugar, Alphonso Mangoes
Alphonso Mangoes create a luscious aroma and spicy complement to Columbus and Simcoe hops. Honey and cane sugar provide additional fermentable sugar for this high ABV brew.

It is a small batch and will not be bottled. No growler fills.

Troegs Scratch # 57 Weizenbock TODAY!

imageYep it’s a Weizenbock with Cocoa & berries and it’s available today (2/7)!  The details from Troegs:

Scratch #57 is brewed with two cocoa powder varieties and two kinds of berries to create a tart twist on a classic German style. Unfiltered and carbonated to a near-champagne finish, the beer is 7.9% ABV.
Fermented in our open-top fermentation room, the yeast gives hints of pepper and clove designed to complement the fruit flavors.

The cocoa powders add bitterness and some mouthfeel; the boysenberries and raspberries provide a tart, dry finish and the vanilla yields a subtle, sweet finish to the beer.
Now on tap and available in bottles!

FOR TRADE: SPLINTER BLACK AND GOOD KARMA
A set of hi-hat cymbals was “borrowed” from Troegs Brewery sometime over the weekend of January 28. These cymbals belonged to our grandfather have sentimental value far greater than their monetary value. We will ask no questions upon their return and will offer the returnee two bottles of SPLINTER BLACK and a healthy dose of good karma. Thanks for your help.
